I was torn between featuring Crystal Lake’s “The Voyages” or “WATCH ME BURN” here but in the end I guess the brand new material won out. You should definitely check out the group’s re-recorded compilation of older tracks too though. Anyway the “WATCH ME BURN” EP features two tracks, the first of which being the title track that has a very anthemic feel to it with equal parts melodic and crunchy guitars doing the bulk of the heavy lifting. In many ways this is a refinement of the style that featured on the group’s most recent album “Helix” and I really liked the energy being brought here. The second track “Disobey” is a much more punishing affair with blistering blast beats and brutal harsh vocals making for a chaotic mix that’s very well suited to the track’s subject matter. The dark, intense spoken word which also features is another highlight and added another interesting dynamic to things. Two very different tracks that’s for sure, but Crystal Lake impress here once again and I look forward to what they have planned for 2021 with great interest.
