POLKADOT STINGRAY – Ichidaiji

POLKADOT STINGRAY have become something of a staple of this feature and who can blame me? If I’m ever in need of some quality female-fronted J-Rock then they’re my first port of call. Their new EP “Ichidaiji” continues to build on what the band previously produced on their debut album “Zenchi Zenno” that was released last year. That being songs with quirky and in a lot of ways refreshing guitar riffs paired with lead vocalist Shizuku’s ability to captivate you with her voice while at the same time being able to deliver some less than straightforward lines with power and ease. The band have somewhat commercialized their sound since being picked up by a major label, but such is life I suppose. I know a few people got all hung up on that but a couple releases after the fact and I’m still enjoying POLKADOT STINGRAY as much as I ever have. If you’re new to them and want a taste of what’s on offer then check out “Shoujo no Tsuzuki” and “Pandora Box” from this EP.
