[Roundup] Non-Idol Picks of Q2 2019

waterweed – Diffuse

Closing out this edition of the roundup are Osaka’s waterweed. A Skate Punk turned Melodic Hardcore band formed in 2003, “Diffuse” is the third album from the 4-piece and my first introduction to their music. To say that I am very late to this particular party would be an incredible understatement. A shame too as I rather enjoyed this release. In a world of songs frequently topping 4 or even 5 minutes, waterweed instead opt for blisteringly fast and venom filled numbers that rarely pass the 3 minute mark. A breath of fresh air indeed, with tracks such as “Dreaming Dead” and “Counterfeit” prime examples of what I’m referring to. If you’re in the mood for something a little bit more melodic then “Face the reality” and “Grateful song” provide us with that side of the genre equation. Given this is my first time checking out this band, I have to say that this is a really enjoyable album and I hear their previous works might be even better. So that bodes well for anyone, myself included, looking for some further listening after checking this one out.
