Indie Rock trio The Cheserasera are the first of several new discoveries for me in this edition of the roundup. Formed in Tokyo in 2009, “Maboroshi” is the band’s fourth studio album coming two years after their last effort “dry blues”. Indie Rock is perhaps a very bland description of the band’s sound, which often times strays into a rather raw Shoegaze style as heard on tracks such as “Random Killer” or “Night and Day”, before mellowing out like on title track “Maboroshi”. There is of course plenty of that more typical Indie Rock flavor with numbers such as “Zanzou Film” and “Mata Aeru ni Niwa” in particular catching my attention. In a scene with no shortage of bands plying their trade on an Indie Rock sound, The Cheserasera stand out with the fire behind their vocal delivery and their willingness to incorporate a healthy mixture of complimentary genres into their base sound.
