To say that Hi-STANDARD are pretty influential in the Japanese Punk scene would be a huge understatement. The fact that their latest album “The Gift” was plastered all over every Tower Records I set foot in during my November travels would support my previous assessment. Formed in 1991 but having taken most of the 2000s off due to hiatus, “The Gift” is the band’s first album release since getting back together and if you’re a Punk fan like me then you need to check this out. Not only does it blend modern and 90s/00s Punk Rock incredibly well but as with all Hi-STANDARD songs, everything is sung in English. 25 years and one hiatus later, the band sounds as energetic and catchy as ever.
