Hitsujibungaku – Zawameki

While Hitsujibungaku are fairly widely known for their songs that exude highly charged angst, the 3-piece have been working on adding some different dynamics to their sound of late. It started on last year’s “Kirameki” EP and looks to be continued here on supplementary release “Zawameki” which adds 5 more tracks to the latest chapter of the band’s career. They’re keeping things fairly simple up and down the EP, with the focus this time around being very clearly on vocalist Shiotsuka Moeka’s very emotional singing voice. Don’t mistake that for a lack of depth though as tracks like “Ningen datta” and “Inori” while a bit more stoic sounding than normal are still as packed with richness and subtlety as ever, just in a different way here. Those looking for something a bit more familiar are also catered to with the emotionally charged second track “Siren”. Hitsujibungaku have shown a lot of growth in the past year, both musically as well as the young adults that the 3 members have slowly become.
