As most of you probably know by now, I was a pretty big fan of Especia during their original run. The less said about the attempted reboot the better in my opinion, but this EP from former member Tominaga Haruka is definitely something I can get behind. She’s struck out on her own, much like former groupmate Wakita Monari, and “Aperitif” is her first release as a solo artist. The EP has a pretty heavy 80s Pop influence with several songs composed by PellyColo who has done work for Especia too in the past. On the whole it’s a pretty chilled out experience, with Haruka being provided with plenty of opportunities to show off her smooth, soulful vocal tones. “Dreamer” is a personal highlight for me with its infectious instrumental although you really can’t go wrong with any of the songs from this release. Highly recommended for fans of Especia, City Pop and songs with 80s Pop sensibilities.
