Everyone loves a good old fashioned subjective list of stuff someone else likes, right?
So last week I posted my “Top 10 Singles/EPs/Mini-Albums of 2016“, or my “Top 10 Everything Else” as I sort of looked at it. Like I said in that article, it wasn’t the most elegant of solutions to a rather large headache but what are you gonna do? Singles seem to be going out of fashion, well the traditional single is anyway. Most of them these days have 4 or 5 songs on them and are more like EPs than anything else. I don’t think that’s a bad thing in the slightest, but at the same time I’m not getting paid to do the 4 or 5 Top 10 lists I would have had to have done had I split everything up and been “professional” about it.
While all that stuff above can probably be debated to death forever, thankfully it’s still pretty easy to determine if something is an album or not, and thus this list should have been a lot easier to put together. I say should, because what happened in 2016 was a bunch of groups just lost the plot and released multiple albums. That’s pretty much unheard of, but I guess maybe that’s the new trend or something. Less releases but when you do release something, it’s maybe 2 or 3 releases worth of music in one package. That’s my speculation on the subject anyway.
So yeah, 2016 had a lot of albums to choose from and like I said some groups took multiple swings at the ball. I haven’t really said that I’ve been doing this, but I’ve pretty much limited each group to 1 entry on my list. No one wants to see PASSPO get 3 spots in a Top 10 or whatever, I don’t anyway. That kind of thing also means we don’t end up talking about a bunch of other very deserving releases so I went for an approach that would give the most variety. Is it very professional of me? Not really, but last I checked no one is paying me to write this stuff so I make the rules!
Just like with the other Top 10 that I did, basically there’s going to be a fairly rough list of albums going from 10 to 1 and it’s my personal picks from the past year. I’m not married to the order particularly, but some combination of these 10 albums are my Top 10 so whatever. I hate rating and ranking so don’t take it too seriously is all I ask. After the Top 10 is done there’ll once again be a handful of “Honorable Mentions” because there was a lot stuff that come out that I enjoyed and it would be shame to not at least mention some of it in passing. Let’s get started.
