When news broke that the producers of You’ll Melt More were producing a new idol group, I was almost certain we were going to get a new dose of insanity in the idol world. I mean, even if you’re not a fan of them everyone knows Yurumeromo thanks to the antics of the craziest idol in all of Japan, Ano. However, what we got next was probably the most unexpected thing: normal-ish idols? Huh? Well, maybe on the surface, but I can’t help but think something else is going on here.
So, instead of girls headbanging or wielding axes as I thought I might see, instead we see a group of cute girls in pink polka dot dresses acting as guardian angels in various scenes. The outfits for this one are pretty cute and look cheap in a kind of endearing way. Also, the looks of these girls are pretty unique. They’re all pretty, but in an edgy kind of way. I really can’t describe it, but they’re not your typical idols as far as looks go. It’s kind of refreshing, honestly. My personal first impression favorite is Kugumi Kohina, a really cute member who has a slight hint of Tanaka Miku going on.
As I touched on before, the theme of this PV seems to be a guardian angel-like assist to people in various situations. The PV also makes use of speech and thought bubble props held up by the members that move the random situations along. Most of the situations are typical idol fare: confessions, friends who reconcile, and even one of their fellows members who needs an inspirational boost. It’s well presented and overcomes the “stock idol stuff” feeling these situations can have.
There’s something else going on in this PV, though. Everything feels… weird. I don’t know if it’s just the Yurumeromo connection, but everything feels like it’s on the verge of going full psycho. The facial expressions are the foremost in giving off this vibe. It’s not all smiles and rainbows, and sometimes the girls look downright bored or even slightly annoyed. The presentation overall just feels really ironic or parody-like at times, and I can’t help but think at any moment blood’s going to spill. This feeling is so consistent that I really think it is intentional on the producer’s part. It’ll be interesting to see if it goes anywhere.
Very rarely do I feel that a PV is multi-dimensional, so it gives this one some bonus points. Even at face value, it’s a cute little PV. The production behind it is nice, it’s well shot, and it’s fun to watch. It’s even more fun to apply some conspiracy theories to it.
The song is kind of the same way. It’s a fairly routine idol pop song that gives off a parody vibe. The instrumentals are decently presented but kinda cheap sounding. The vocals are nice enough but also feel self-deprecating at times. Maybe I’m just blinded by the Yurumerumo connection once again, but really, what’s going on here? It’s nice enough to listen to though. I’m curious to see what they do next. I hope I’m right and something absolutely wild happens. It’ll be fun.

Let’s PocoPoco’s debut mini-album dropped August 10th.
