[Roundup] Non-Idol Picks of Q1 2020

by Garry

Back to a time before all of this madness.

I usually start off these things by saying something along the lines of “man, this was long overdue wasn’t it?” but I just checked and the last one only came out a couple of months ago so I’m positively early by my own incredibly low standards. Under promise and over deliver, that’s the best way to go about things in my experience. I have no idea where I’m going with this train of thought either so let’s get back to business here.

So yeah if you didn’t know, this is the Non-Idol Roundup. An occasional feature on the site where I present a selection of Japanese music releases from typically the previous quarter for your consumption. The idea is that you hopefully get turned onto a band, soloist, etc that you otherwise might never have checked out and we share in our love of cool/interesting/etc music that isn’t Idol related for a change. I usually try to shoot for about a dozen or so releases, give or take 2 or 3 and it’s just nice to cover some different stuff for a change ya know?

Typically I’ll write a paragraph or so about each release, give a rough overview of what it’s like, who it’s by, what it’s called, shoutout a few of my favorite tracks and stuff like that. I’ll also link a music video or similar so you can get an idea of what it sounds like and at the bottom there will also be links to buy should anything really catch your ear. As ever, I get a small cut of whatever you spend when you click those links so if you’d like to support the site while feeding your music cravings then that’s something I would obviously appreciate. No purchases are necessary of course!

My taste in music is pretty wide ranging so expect a decent amount of variety from this list. Granted I have my favorite genres/artists/etc so there’s going to be a few recurring themes if you’ve been following along with this for any amount of time. It’s a good excuse for me to check out new bands/releases/etc though and I’ve definitely discovered quite a few interesting things as a result so it’s well worth the time and effort put in. You guys also seem to enjoy them too which is great, because lord knows you don’t give a fuck about most of the Idol stuff I’ve been writing about of late.

Right, that’s enough from me I think. Time to get into this roundup and take us all back to a place where this whole COVID situation wasn’t quite yet the global disaster that it unfolded into over the past couple of months. As ever I hope that you enjoy the article and let me know if you find something cool to listen to because of it. Also feel free to share your own picks from January through March and what you liked so much about them. That’s what we’re all here for at the end of the day right? The love of music and the desire to share it with others. Let’s get into this roundup.
